The services we offer
School mental health services are supported through multiple sources of funding at the national, state, and local level. Teachers often play a role in identifying students with mental health needs and linking them to care, although prior research suggests that many teachers may not be adequately trained to do so. This includes 10% of schools that say gambling they strongly agree they could effectively provide mental health service and 42% that moderately agreed. School-based mental health services can improve access to care, allow for early identification and treatment of mental health issues, and may be linked to reduced absenteeism and better mental health and substance use outcomes. Some school programs have already reported concerns with providing mental health services in the wake of these recent actions, including programs in New York, North Carolina, and Texas.
Although the percentages of schools reporting that they provided diagnostic assessments and treatment services were lower in 2021–22 than in 2019–20, some 90 percent of public schools reported that they increased social and emotional supports for students in 2021–22, and 78 percent reported doing so for staff. Most school counselors hold a master’s degree in school counseling, psychology, or a related field, which equips them with the skills to support students academically and emotionally within the educational system. Second, school counselors recognized that social service providers that supportfamilies on medical assistance were especially overwhelmed with referrals forlong-term support, and low-income students relied on school counselors for mentalhealth services more than ever.

When they are inclusive, safe, and caring, they don’t just prevent harm – they safeguard mental health, support resilience, and help learners thrive. While telehealth became a more widely used pathway to delivering health care since the pandemic, a growing number of schools were already providing care through telehealth prior to the pandemic. These disruptions come at a time when approximately 1 in 5 teens are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression and many youth have reported bullying and exposure to violence, which can have adverse effects on their mental health. There is overlap in the roles and responsibilities in the positions above, and many of the providers do similar work. This may include mental health care, or a school nurse may refer you to another resource.

School counselors must also be prepared to work with students who have learning disabilities. School counselors allocate much of their focus to designing and implementing programs that promote academic and personal success for all their students. Counselors also guide students through the emotional struggles that often come with school and childhood. Teachers arguably spend the most time with their students and may be able to spot early signs of mental health concerns, but they need assistance when such issues are identified. As such, teachers, counselors and other school staff are among the first to notice changes in behavior that could signal a mental or behavioral health issue. Counselors in particular can be critical support systems for students struggling with their mental health.
